Abersoch is a sailing village first. Two clubs sit within a few hundred metres of each other at the head of the bay, dinghies are hauled up the beach through the summer, and the harbour fills and empties with the tide. Beyond the bay, Porth Neigwl takes the swell and carries the surf.

South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club
The South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club — SCYC — was founded in 1924 and sits on the Headland, next to Abersoch main beach. It is rated 4.4★ from 76 reviews in the directory, and it is the larger and more established of the two clubs.
The club has over 900 members and runs both dinghy and keelboat sailing from Easter through to October. It hosts national and international championships, and in its 2024 centenary year it staged the Edinburgh Cup, the British Dragon national championship.

Away from the water, the village keeps its own rhythm. There is an annual summer jazz festival and a regatta, and boat trips run out to St Tudwal’s and to Bardsey Island.

Surfing at Porth Neigwl
Porth Neigwl — Hell’s Mouth — is a bay about four miles long between Mynydd Rhiw and Mynydd Cilan, facing south-west. It is one of Wales’s most popular surf beaches, and it is rated 4.8★ from 280 reviews in the directory.
Take its reputation seriously. The bay is exposed, it is not lifeguarded, and it is known for strong rip currents and shifting sandbars. It is best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers who are already comfortable in open water. If you are learning, or you want somewhere to swim rather than surf, the sheltered village beaches are a safer bet.
There are no facilities at the beach and no lifeguard cover, so come prepared. The bay is seldom busy, and dogs are allowed on the sand — which is not true of Abersoch main beach in summer.
Boat trips to St Tudwal's Islands
Just off the southern tip of the Llŷn, and south of Abersoch, lie the two St Tudwal’s Islands. They take their name from the 6th-century hermitage of Saint Tudwal, and the larger of the two is still marked by a lighthouse that was built in 1877, automated in 1922 and has been solar-powered since 1995.
The reason most people go out is the wildlife. The islands hold breeding grey seals, along with seabirds including razorbills, guillemots and chough, and small boats run from Abersoch carrying passengers out to see them.
