That makes Pwllheli the natural gateway for almost every journey here, whether you arrive by rail, bus or coach. Where Abersoch is

Abersoch lies roughly seven miles south-west of Pwllheli, at the southern end of the A499. The A499 is the road that runs down the peninsula, and Pwllheli is where it meets the wider network — which is why every route to the village, by whatever mode, passes through there.

From the other direction, Caernarfon is about 27 miles to the north-east. The village itself is compact enough that once you have arrived, most of the harbour and High Street is a short walk.

By train

The nearest railway station is Pwllheli, on the Transport for Wales network, roughly 9.4km from Abersoch. There is no station at Abersoch itself, so the rail journey ends at Pwllheli and the last few miles are made by road — either on the bus described below, or by taxi or car.

Longer journeys by coach

For arrivals from further afield, National Express route 545 runs from London Victoria through Birmingham, Chester, Bangor and Caernarfon, terminating at Pwllheli. From Pwllheli the final leg into Abersoch is the same bus 18 or road journey as any other arrival.

Coming from the north coast this way means crossing to Caernarfon and then heading south-west down the peninsula. It is a long journey, but it is the one long-distance coach connection that serves the area.

Getting around once you are here

Once in Abersoch, the two most useful ways to cover the coast are the bus and your own feet. Route 18 continues through Llanbedrog and Sarn Bach towards Pwllheli, which covers the stretch east of the village — including the run out to Llanbedrog for the Plas Glyn y Weddw gallery, without needing to walk the coast path first. West of the village the road network is thinner, and the paths out towards Porth Neigwl are walking routes rather than transport links.

East on foot, the coast path runs from Abersoch to Llanbedrog — roughly eight miles there and back — passing the Plas Glyn y Weddw gallery on the way. West, the shorter section out to Machroes takes roughly an hour and returns along the beach if the tide allows.

One thing to plan around if you have a dog: they are banned from Abersoch main beach between 1 April and 30 September, from the right of the boatyard at Lon Pont Morgan to the beach car park on Golf Road. The beaches at Porth Neigwl and Machroes do not carry that restriction.
